Chapter 8

Us vs. Her Majesty

Has anyone ever dropped an ice cube down the back of your shirt? Well, that’s exactly how I felt when Michael came up with that idea.

“It’s so easy,” Michael said. “We’re the only ones who know that Queen Tiye’s legend is true and that her mummy is wandering around in search of her grandson. He has to beat her at senet so she can finally rest in peace.”

“You mean unfortunately we’re the only ones who know,” I muttered.

“All it would take is one of us, disguised as Tutankhamen, to beat the queen,” Michael said. “Then everything would go back to normal.”

“Don’t look at me!” I protested. “I’m a bat. I can’t dress up like a pharaoh!”

“Who said anything about you doing it?” Michael asked. “I meant Tyler.”

“Me? Forget about it,” Tyler said, shaking his head. “Come on, Echo, we have a championship to train for.”

I was about to flutter out of the room with him, when Michael spoke up. “You know, honestly, I don’t think you’re afraid of the mummy, Tyler. I think you’re afraid of losing!”

Tyler and I looked at each other. I knew what he was thinking. The two of us losing at a game of senet against a 3,500-year-old queen, like a couple of chickens? No way!

“You know what, Michael?” Tyler said, planting himself in front of his brother. “We accept the challenge! Call Queen Tiye, and tell her we’re on our way.”
